MY ROLE

  • UX/UI designer designing a mobile app for Forest Flower

ABOUT THE FAKE CLIENT

Forest Flower is a local flower store in Perth. They strive to deliver fresh and well-designed floral products to customers. They offer a wide range of floral products at competitive prices and provide floral arrangement services for weddings. They also offer subscription services that allow their subscribers receive bouquets frequently.

PROBLEM

Since the Covid pandemic, small businesses suffered a huge loss due to the Covid restrictions. Although all restrictions have gone, people who are worried about their personal health still avoid unnecessary trips to crowded floral stores. At the same time, busy workers who love flowers do not have time to shop in person, but still want to buy fresh flowers for themselves frequently. Beyond these, people who are in long-distance relationships living in another area lack access to buy flowers for their loves in person.

THE GOAL

Design an accessible and inclusive florist mobile app.

The app allows users to easily order, preview, and subscribe to flower delivery services online.

USER RESEARCH + PAIN POINTS

I conducted interviews with 5 interviewers and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was people who would like to buy flowers but are unable to go to a flower store in person because of time and distance.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Forest Flower customers, but research also revealed that time and distance were not the only factors limiting users from shop bouquets in the store. Other user problems included worries about coronavirus that make people avoid unnecessary trips.

Three Major Pain Points:

Time

Working adults are too busy to spend time on go to flower stores in-person

Distance

People who are in long-distance relationships are not able to shop for bouquets and send them to their partners in-person

Coronavirus

Due to increased covid cases, people who have concerns may refuse to walk into a busy store and select flowers in-person

USER PERSONA + USER JOURNEY

PAPER WIREFRAME

The original paper wireframes show the idea from the beginning.

DIGITAL WIREFRAME + LO-FI PROTOTYPE

Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I created was the process of customizing and ordering flowers. The prototype could be used in a usability study.

USABILITY TESTING: FINDINGS

The purpose of this florist app is to help customers select, preview, and order flowers online. Therefore, we need to find out whether the main user experience, selecting, previewing, and ordering flowers is easy for users to complete.

There are 2 main findings:

  1. Users want a customization page with more details.

  2. Users cannot delete products from the cart before checkout. Therefore, a 'remove' button was added to allow the customer to decide their choices before checkout.

SELF - REFLECTION

Forest Flowers App is my first UX project, and it is the beginning of my UX learning path. While designing the Forest Flowers App, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.

What I’d do differently next time

I was not that clear about how User Experience and User Interface design are different. While designing this florist app, I focused too much on designing the interface, and spent too much time on playing with the colors and font. After learning more about UX design, I understood that I should pay more attention on the features, the accessibility, and whether the app is user friendly.

Thank you for reviewing my work!

Hope you enjoy the project! And I would be grateful to hear your feedback😊
